Healthy sight
What a person notices. Edges are sharp, colours are full, and the whole view is clear from the centre to the corners. This is what the others are measured against.
How we check. A yearly check keeps it that way: vision, pressure, and a look at the retina through a widened pupil.
What can be done. Nothing is needed. Choose a condition, and drag the slider.
Cataract
What a person notices. A haze, like looking through a dirty window. Colours fade towards yellow, lights glare, and reading needs more light.
How we check. The slit lamp, and measurements before surgery, including a look at the cells that line the cornea.
What can be done. Surgery replaces the clouded lens with a clear one.

What a person notices. The edges close in, slowly and without pain, until sight is like looking down a tube. The centre stays sharp for a long time, which is why it is missed.
How we check. Eye pressure, a look at the optic nerve, and an OCT scan of its fibre layer.
What can be done. Drops, laser or surgery stop further loss. What is lost cannot be brought back.
Read how we treat it →Diabetic retinopathy
What a person notices. Dark spots and strings drift across the view, and patches go dim. In the early stages, nothing is noticed at all.
How we check. A widened-pupil examination, a photograph of the retina and an OCT scan, once a year at least.
What can be done. Laser seals leaking vessels, and some eyes need surgery. Controlling sugar and blood pressure protects the retina.
Read how we treat it →Macular disease
What a person notices. A blur or a dark patch in the very centre of what you look at. Lines bend, and faces and print go missing while the edges stay clear.
How we check. An OCT scan of the macula, and a photograph of the retina.
What can be done. Treatment depends on the type and the stage, and finding it early leaves the most choices.
Read how we treat it →Short-sightedness
What a person notices. Distance is blurred and near is clear. Signs across the road cannot be read, and everything far away melts at the edges.
How we check. The auto ref-keratometer, then trial lenses to find the exact power.
What can be done. Glasses or contact lenses, or surgery to reshape the cornea or add a lens.

What does Netralaya mean?
Netra means eye and alaya means home, so Netralaya is a home for the eyes. Arihant Netralaya is the super speciality eye hospital of Arihant Multispeciality Hospital in Nagpur.
Do I need an appointment?
You can ask for a time on this website, on WhatsApp, or toll-free on 1800 210 0108, and the desk will confirm it. For a sudden loss of vision, an injury, or a chemical splash, do not wait: call the 24 × 7 emergency line, 0712 665 6666.
Why are my pupils widened, and can I drive afterwards?
Drops that widen the pupil let the doctor see the retina and the optic nerve properly. Near vision stays blurred and light is uncomfortable for about four to six hours. Bring sunglasses and someone to take you home, and do not drive until your sight is comfortable again.
Is there an optical shop?
Yes. The Advanced Optical Shop is part of Netralaya, so a prescription can be made up in the same building where it was written.
